Co-curricular activities

Dance

Kareela Public School has six (6) dance groups. The Stage 1 Girls Dance Group (Year 1 and 2 Girls), Year 3 Girls Dance Group, Year 4 Girls Dance Group, Stage 3 Dance Group (Year 5 and 6 Girls), Junior Boys Hip Hop (Year 1 and Year 2 Boys), and Senior Boys Hip Hop (Year 3 - 6 Boys).

Students are required to pay a participation fee and attend weekly rehearsals taught by an external choreographer. Dance groups perform at a range of events throughout the year including Open Day, Dance Extravaganza, Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival, our school 'Mini' Musical (Performing Arts Nights) and local competitions.

We are also so proud to be a 'Spectacular School' with a select group of students successfully auditioning to be a part of the Schools Spectacular combined primary dance segment since 2019.

Band

Kareela Public School's band program provides children with the opportunity to develop musically and be part of a team. Band rehearsals, camps, the excitement of performances and the pleasure of performing as a team all contribute to a rich learning experience.

Choir

Kareela Public School has two choirs. The Junior Choir is comprised of students from Year 1 and Year 2, and the Senior Choir, Years 4, 5 and Year 6 students. The choirs are not audition based and students who enjoy the experience of choral singing are encouraged to join.

Students who are a member of a choir are required to attend weekly rehearsals and showcase what they have learnt throughout the year at a number of performances, the highlight being Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival.

Drama/Musical Theatre

Each year Kareela Public School creates their very own 'Mini' Musical that provides an opportunity for interested students to create, improvise and perform. Students are required to audition for all acting parts in the show.

All dance, choir, band and visual arts club students are also part of the Kareela Public School 'Mini' Musical.

Lunchtime Clubs

Other co-curricular activities that our students are welcome to join at lunchtimes in 2023 are Chess Club and Visual Arts Club.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

This Premier’s Reading Challenge encourages students from Kindergarten to Year 9 to develop a love of reading and plays an important role in developing literacy.

Premier’s Debating Challenge

The Premier’s Debating Challenge is open to students from Year 5 to 12. Teams compete in a round robin series of debates against other schools. The winners go on to compete at regional and state level to determine the eventual state champion.

Public Speaking Competitions

The Arts Unit offers public speaking competitions for NSW school students. Each competition is a great opportunity for students to develop their speech-writing and presentation skills while representing their schools in a state-wide competition.

Premier’s Spelling Bee

The Premier’s Spelling Bee is an annual competition that encourages primary school students in Years 3 to 6 to develop their spelling skills in a fun and educational way. Students are selected at school level to take part in regional finals. Regional winners then compete in the state final.

High Potential and Gifted Education

High Potential and Gifted students are those whose potential is distinctly above average in one or more of the following areas of ability at school - intellectual, creative, social and physical.

Our co-curricular activities provide these students with learning opportunities on top of the normal curriculum.
